Our group of accredited schools, colleges and universities (grouped collectively as The Chubb Institute and Banner Institute) offer online degrees, programs and other distance education courses in the following disciplines:
This program prepares the participant to install, configure, and use Linux and other Open Source solutions in the business environment. The focus of this course is employing existing, off-the-shelf products in a building block approach to solve real business needs. General programming languages (C, C++, Perl, Python, and the like) are not emphasized. Configuring and supporting Linux-based servers and workstations for general business operations (word processing, planning, scheduling, accounting, Internet access, data management, and presentations) are the main focus of this program. Upon completion, the participant should be competent to install, maintain, and secure a Linux or MS Windows/Linux LAN, to configure a Linux firewall, to install and configure Sun's StarOffice and other Open Source office solutions, to establish Linux-based e-mail solutions, and to work in both character-based and graphical (X-Window) environments. Over the course of the 8 weeks, students will work toward completing a major project: designing and implementing a small-office solution with a collection of both MS Windows and Linux client workstations, two Linux servers, and (if possible) a Linux firewall. In addition to demonstrating installation and configuration skills, students will install and operate a network printer, a simple database application, an e-mail service with multiple clients, tiered security (access controls), and Internet access. Students will create descriptive documentation (including simple diagrams) and a presentation in StarOffice as part of their final project demonstration. Students will also conduct a research project (on an individual or team basis) in the form of a "proposal" outlining the cost/benefit analysis of a Linux-only or hybrid Linux/MS Windows solution compared to a Microsoft-only solution. Presentations of these analyses will occur about midway through the 8-week program. linux program
